1) The washing machine broke on Sunday night - it was full of water, wouldn't agitate, wouldn't drain. Quite distressing for my wife, who was trying to wash clothes for Monday. The odd thing is that when she got hold of someone, he knew what it was right away - the sensor that stops the washer when you open the door (It's a top-loader) was broken and throught the door was open all the time.

Now get this - This broken piece could be by-passed for $10, or we could get a new one for $140... in a $300 washer. So, for half the cost of the washer, we could get a tiny little door-sensing part. How does that make any sense at all? So, we got the bypass.

2) It's snowing! Everyone's late to work and it's very cold outside. I hope you're not stuck in it.

It has become quite common in appliances and electronics that replacing something is often cheap enough to make repairing it unappealing. Note the scarcity of television and appliance technicians these days. What this says about our culture, I couldn't tell you.

The bit that senses whether the door is closed is typically just a pressure switch, which you can buy at Radio Shack for a few dollars. I'm guessing the money goes into waterproofing or something like that.
