Came across an interesting article in Techmeme: Downtown Wi-Fi surfing turns out to be easy, even if you're indoors (Pitsburgh post-gazette)

Apparently a company in Pittsburgh, my college town which I still think of quite fondly, did an interesting comprimise between free wifi and paid wifi - you can get two hours of downtown wifi for free, and after that you need to pay for it. It's an interesting idea, and I'd be happy to use it if I wasn't, oh, on the wrong side of the continent.

Here in Denver the closest to that is the free Wi-Fi on the 16th street mall, an oudoor walking mall (no cars) not far from where I work. It's got to be most annoying to the various Starbucks locations along the mall, which still serve their mandated T-mobile paid wireless. Amusingly enough when I was in one of these Starbucks two weeks ago, working in a Starbucks, the T-mobile signal kept overpowering the free wireless from the mall... but I ended up getting free wireless from the hotel next door instead! Take that, Starbucks. :) (The hotel wireless was unsecured, and I wasn't downloading any files, so I don't think my use of their wireless bothered anyone.)

I like wifi - it's fun to go out and work somewhere other than at home.. although now that I've got a second monitor for my laptop, I'm less eager to go out someplace where I'll only have one screen to use. I wonder when we'll have companies producing laptops with double screens that fold out?
