Had a very interesting time last night. I may not have mentioned it before, but I'm a user of meetup.com - I'm a member of various groups there, and I run three: Denver Boardgames, Denver Anime, and Denver SF/F Readers. I got into the running gig when Meetup shifted their business model to charging organizers a little each month, letting the organizers collect money from the members or find sponsorship or whichever. (It's low enough that I don't bother trying to gather money from folks, although sometimes people slip me a few bucks.)

Last night we had a special gettogether for all of the Meetup Organizers here in and around Denver, at Dixon's downtown. It was very surprising to Elizabeth, who works at the headquarters and is making a tour through the US contacting groups of organizers, in that for the previous 8 or so get-togethers she'd had 50% of the folks who said they'd come show up. Here in Denver, she got closer to 85% of them show up, and at 54 people that meant that Dixon's back room was positively packed with organizers of all different sorts. There were a lot of 'stay-at-home mom' groups represented from various sections of the city, some technical groups, a fair number of business-related groups.

It was fun to get together and have a discussion about things that we'd like meetup.com to do better on their website, although the size of the discussion threatened to overwhelm Elizabeth. She kept more or less on top of it, and I was sorry I had to go when I did. But the parking on the street would only let me stay for two hours, and I'd had no idea it was going to go this long when I'd arrived. (I'm so cheap. :)

And now it's time to get ready for NDK tomorrow. Wow.

I'm amazed anyone actually still uses meetup anymore. $10 per month per meeting...ugh.

Well, no wonder, because that's not how it works.

$9/month, flat rate. I've got three groups, so that's $3/month. One group meets twice a month, and the the other one often meets twice a month, so call it 4.5 meetings/month... which is $2/meeting.

What's $2? One less trip to starbucks? Feh.

Besides, I've gotten a nice free coffeemaker, a free boardgame, and now two free meals out of them. I'm almost ahead. :)

Edit:

The coffeemaker and boardgame weren't from meetup.com. The coffeemaker company wanted me to show the coffeemaker off to a group, and the boardgame company wants me to show off the boardgame to my boardgame group. But I wouldn't have gotten them if I wasn't running a group.
