Harry Potter Thought

So, last night, relaxing after the BenCon meeting, my wife tossed in a copy of the first Harry Potter movie while I was futzing around on the computer in the corner - reading mail, scanning newsgroups, the usual.

My attention was gained during the sorting ceremony, where the hat's trying to convince Harry he's a Slytherin, and Harry's trying to go anywhere but there, and it hit me - it'd be an interesting Alternate universe to have where Harry *does* go into Slytherin. It wouldn't be a cake walk for him - for one thing, I don't suppose he'd stop loathing Draco, and Snape (as we know) wouldn't go any easier on him there.

Are there any good Harry Potter fanfics out there where he ends up in the wrong house? I'm sure there's got to be something out there, but my first attempts at googling up harry potter fanfics weren't that successful. (There seems to be www.harrypotterfanfiction.com, but the search interface is problematic.)

Unfortunately, I can't help you with that particular fic request, but I *can* link you to possibly the best fic I've ever read: The Shadow of His Wings (http://theguestroom.houseofhobbits.com/hp/sohw.html). It's got Harry/Draco as a pairing, so be prepared, but it's also got the best look at Slytherins as a House I've seen yet.

I have indeed read fanfic where Harry is Sorted into Slytherin, or gets put in Slytherin later, or any of a number of combos. Sadly, when I read fanfic, it tends to not be Harry-centric, so I can't for the life of me remember where I saw those.

I can give you some sites to search, though, if you don't mind wading through slash, and live-journal has many HP-fic communities. I don't know the state of fanfiction.net these days, but when I was part of it, before they took down the NC-17 stuff, there was tons and tons of Potter-fic.
