Jan. 18th, 2005 04:41 pmIt's an interesting thing to work downtown. I've never done it before.
My first job in Denver was situated up in the foothills, in Golden. It was a 20-25 minute walk to the nearest store, and that was more a refilling/convenience stop for people passing by on I-70 than anything else. Going out for lunch entailed spending at least 10 minutes each way driving to a restaurant.
Downtown is very different. I'm in the 14th floor of a tall tower, there's two restaurants and a convenience store in the 1st floor of my building, and I can walk to probably two dozen restaurants in 5 minutes. It's much more compact.
I'm liking it. I like having all this around me. I'm glad I live where I do - my commute's pretty short. I'm even enjoying the building I'm in - the stairwells are unlocked, so I can run up and down and get some excersize. (By unlocked, I mean that you can exit the stairwells back onto the floor I work on. I've been in some places where once you're in the stairwell, you have to go to the bottom, exit, and then come back in again via the door.)
I went out for a walk at lunch. I ambled along 19th street to Arapahoe, walked down and poked my head into a salad restaurant. It's a big buffet, you pick what you want, and buy it by weight. I think I'll go there sometime, but today I felt like continuing on. So I walked down to 16th, passing along and having a look at 'Skyline Park', which used to be a lot of beige concrete blocks, but had recently been remade with a lot more grass - I think I like it a little better like this. Reaching 16th, I walked along it, poking my head into restaurants from time to time to see what looked appealing. I passed four men playing chess on a table, with a few men watching.
I finally ended up at a McDonalds. I considered the Chili's Too across the street, but they had people waiting to eat, and I didn't want to wait. So I ducked into the McDonalds, got some chicken fingers, and went back outside to sit on a bench, eat, and read. (The Pragmatic Programmer, if you were wondering.) While I was eating a woman sat down, walking her little pug on a leash. The pug wanted some of my meal, and kept whining a little and tugging on his leash, which I found amusing as I read about Design by Contract. After a bit they moved on, and I called my wife and chatted.
That done, I came back to work and folded a little origami box. :)

Date: 2005-01-19 02:17 pm (UTC)You know, I was thinking (while going down the stairs the other day), that if I were to fall and break something, it might take me a while to be found. Hopefully my cell phone would work.
That said, I found a piece of a cookie there on Tuesday that I'm pretty sure wasn't there before, so someone else is using the stairs.

Date: 2005-01-19 08:14 pm (UTC)What do you do if the stairwell locks you in? Well, you call your wife and have her sue the architect for you. Or you figure out how to break the lock, I guess.
It's not something fun to really think about.

Unfortunately the collection we've got now remains as it is, until we get more space (ie. a bigger place). And, well, the money too... but that's a given. ^^
