A busy John is a happy John...
May. 27th, 2004 10:15 amWell, things have been keeping me busy lately...
A) Work
Work's been going very well. I'm finding the job interesting, and I've really been impressing the owner. He's been asking my opinion on more and more things, which has been a bit startling. But I need to keep my head up, and pay attention to what's going on, and to answer the questions.
B) Learnin'
Learnin's fun, and continuing nicely. The ASP.NET studying has hit a pause, unfortunately, because I'm too busy with work. But I'll get back on it soon, and whack it down a bit. I've also been learning about CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) and DirectX. CSS is interesting - I finally found a book on Designing with CSS that skips over the 'you can turn all the paragraphs green' stuff that doesn't sound interesting at all, but instead goes on to say 'Hey, if you want to, you could do two paragraphs like this, and this is why it works', which grabs my attention. I think I want to get more into computer graphics, but I think I also need some training. I'm looking into the Red Rocks Community college, though, which is inexpensive.
C) Tacticon
I'm the RPG coordinator for the fall gaming convention here in Denver, and there's a fair amount of work to do. But I think I see a program I can write to make this work easier, and it looks like a fun program to do. Shouldn't take me too long either - I can use XML serialization to handle the file saving part of it.
D) Writing
Now that I don't have free time anymore, naturally I'm writing again. It doesn't make sense to me either. I've been working a bit more on a Fanfic I started the other day - 'The Diamond Age', taking Sailor moon and throwing it into the sixth millenium. I'm trying to have fun with coming up with a future that is demonstrably different in a few ways, but is still largely understandable. In the second chapter, for instance, everyone is shocked by seeing a house burn - because with the building materials they use, houses simply don't burn. It's taking a nano/genetic technology view of the world, and less of a metal/robot one. We'll see how it works out, because I'm mostly writing it as I go, although I do have some idea of where I'm trying to get. And then there's Heroes of the Floating Worlds, which I'm working on too.
E) DASFAx
I continue to edit and publish the Denver area Science Fiction Association's newsletter, once a month. I need to learn how to stretch it out over more than 48 hours of production, though.
And this weekend is BenCon, where I'm helping my wife run the board games. Whee!
