Hi all.

Well, Nan Desu Kan 2003 seems to be a grand success so far, at least from the point of view of the registration booth. I like working Registration at NDK because for Friday and the first few hours of Saturday, it's really hard and demanding - and then after that it's really quite relaxed. So, if on Saturday afternoon there's something I want to go do, it's trivial to get permission to leave my station for a few hours... but on the other hand, I don't really see anything of the con Friday. But that's fine.

I was planning to work only half a day on Friday, having worked an extra hour each day previous to make up for it, but a problem arose about 10:30 that required me to stay until 12:45, when the fixes were accepted by Change Management - but there weren't any problems and soon I was rocketing my way along I-70 from my work to the convention. I was able to be here at 2:00 when it was time to open, and soon settled down and was handing out prereg badges (M-R) as fast as the customers showed up. It's not difficult work, and just requires you to hang on and do it, and by the time my wife showed up from her work it was just about time to shut down and enjoy a Subway sandwich for dinner. After that, Tammy went home to check on the house and I pretty much went straight to bed.

The next morning I got up early and went out with Tammy to Waffle House, and then we headed back to the convention, where I found out that registration was opening at 9am instead of 8. I wandered about the convention and checked stuff out before my shift, and settled down at 9 to help with prereg - but there really weren't a lot of prereg people showing up. So I handed the job over to another staffer who has trouble walking and standing, and went to help manage the lines for new registration, which were rather heavy with people wanting to just enjoy Saturday.

But soon enough that died down, so I took a break, collected my wife, and hit the dealer's room. We've got a nice variety of dealers this year - a lot of people have some of the same items, which causes some competition, but everyone's got some difference in what they're carrying. Just about everyone is selling DVDs at 20% off, and a good number are selling manga volumes at the same discount. I've picked up a few volumes - One Piece vol 1, another volume of the mystery series I liked so much last entry, a sequel to the 'Angel' manga I also liked, Duklyon - a CLAMP series about a sentai team, and something else that escapes me at the moment. I also note the number of VHS tapes for deep discount - I've since gone home and got a list of what we're looking for.

After that we hit KFC for some lunch, and then I went into the anime music video room for a bit while my wife got back to her sewing. By some quirk of registration, the hotel room I got is across the hall from the staircase. Because of this, I have an extra room - basically a suite - which is set up with a rectangular table and conference chairs. Tammy saw that and brought her sewing machine and the Renaissance costume she's been working on to the convention, and she's been spending her time here taking advantage of all the free space to get work done. (And the lack of distractions. She's been finding Everquest quite distracting at home.)

The rest of the day went well. I've gotten a number of photos of various costumes that I like - many of them of cute girls, I'll admit - and I hope to set up a little webpage showing them off in the future. Last night Tammy and I wandered the halls for a bit taking pictures, and then she went to bed while I went to MST3NDK, a fan-made parody of various really badly dubbed shows. They're not quite as good as the originals, but they had some very nice lines - "Oscar Wilde only wishes he was this gay" was one that almost killed me at the end of 'Magical Princess Gigi'. They were also doing 'Robotech: The Movie' and 'Lensman', but at that point it was midnight and I went to bed.

Today, a mixed program of registration and grabbing a few bargains from the dealer's room, at which point I'll explain some fun Kubrick things I picked up.
