You know, I still dimly remember back in college, when I didn't know what hemorrhoids were. I learned back then when I got some, and they were very inflamed and painful. I was really scared for a while - it felt like parts of my intestine were coming out - but once the doctor told me what they were I relaxed. After all, they advertise hemorrhoid medication on TV - it can't be that bad.
After that they tended to bother me from time to time until last December, when I started Weight Watchers. One of the many benefits I found from losing weight is that my Hemorrhoids just stopped flaring up entirely.
Unfortunately, it looks like last Wednesday I had a batch of bad clam chowder. Two friends who had the same meal as I at the same time also got sick, but luckily? all that happened to me was I got a lot of gas and diarrhea. The gas wasn't a problem, but the diarrhea made me sit on the toilet so much that my hemorrhoids flared up like nobody's business. The stomach ailment passed by Friday night... but Saturday I was completely useless, only able to feebly lay down on the couch and watch TV. It got a little better on Sunday, allowing me to help with demolishing the last of our old cabinets, but it was still bad, and I decided to go to the doctor today.
Well, good thing I did. It turns out that there was a blood clot in one of my hemorrhoids. Ow. So the Doctor pulled me into his small operating room, carefully didn't tell me how much it would hurt, and got out the clot. Owww.
I'll say it again. Owww.
I feel better, now. I've got Tylenol with Codeine, which is the medicine of the gods. But it's still sore back there.
Humorous note: After helping me use a feminine pad to stop the bleeding between my legs, my wife went off to the hardware store to pick up some supplies. People can not say that I'm not in touch with my feminine side. :)
So - don't get hemorrhoids if you can help it. And if you do, and they bother you, make sure to visit a doctor. Because although the operation hurt a lot, I feel better right now than I did this morning.
