NDK 2009 Summary
Sep. 15th, 2008 08:13 amSo, this whole weekend was busy. Thursday night, my beautiful and talented wife, Tammy, had her car stop working exactly when she was picking me up at the bus, in the rain. Happily, we were able to call a nearby friend who was heading down to the con that night, so she picked us up, loaded a few last items into her car, and dropped us off at home on her way to the convention. Friday I dropped my wife off at work on my way to work, and happily our fantastic auto service place, 'Toylexus', was willing to pay for someone to tow her car in and pass the bill along to us. They had some spare time too, so they were able to diagnose the bad battery and replace it, allowing us to pick it up after work. It's why we love them.
The convention was, on the whole, pretty laid back at times, and painful at times. It was laid back because I was working in the con suite for staff - feeding folks as they come into the suite and letting them continue their hard work with good food inside of them. It was painful because my on-and-off foot pain decided to be on for much of the weekend, and so although I enjoyed walking around and seeing some of the fantastic costumes, I couldn't walk far without feeling like I was going to fall over. Sigh. Today, my stomach is upset and doesn't really want food - too much bad junk, although I was trying to eat well. However, I think I chose poorly at the reception.
Yes, Reception. One of the really cool things about the convention is that our executive co-directors, Jeremy and Amanda, got married right after closing ceremonies. All of the staff was invited, although apparently some folks missed the wedding ceremony because of confusion about when it would be. That said, it was a lovely ceremony and I was really glad to see it - weddings are just so sweet. All of their families were there too, amusingly enough, with special 'Wedding Guest' convention badges.
After that there was frenzied work to turn an auditorium seating a thousand or two people into a reception hall - chairs were stacked and removed, tables were wheeled in, and tablecloths and decorations had to be set up. My foot had calmed down a lot by then, so I happily zig-zagged around the room, helping to get things in shape, which was neat. After that a lot of sandwiches and pizza came in to feed us all, and much fun was had. The new couple danced the Tango as their first dance, and due to a tradition in Jeremy's family, they cut their wedding cake with his grandfather's naval sword.
I was really glad to see it all, and it made me feel more a part of the NDK staff to be there... but at 10 I was really glad to get out of there and get home for sleep. Blissful sleep...
