Or, at least, getting better.

For a while there - about two weeks, I was generally run down - back hurting, trouble sleeping, bit of a cold - just a combination of stress and the change in the weather getting me down. I doubt it has anything much to do with the election - which I wasn't too excited about - but more a reflection that I'm doing far too much in September/October. September has Tacticon - which I run a major part of - and Nan Desu Kan - which I help with running the Registration, which can really wear one down. It wasn't as big of a deal when I was just running games at Tacticon, but now that I'm really in charge of things, I need to really lean off of helping at Nan Desu Kan. I love helping people, but it's becoming clear that I need to be able to say 'No' more often.

I really didn't enjoy Nan Desu Kan this year. It was nice to hang out in the Dealer's room and look at some things, but I've not really been into the anime scene very much lately, and a lot of what's really hot right now just zooms over my head. In my days, I remember when we had to trade fansubbed tapes back and forth. I remember getting a postcard in the mail from AnimEigo declaring that they were actually going to translate and subtitle an anime show called Madox-01, and wondering what the heck that was. Nowadays I can pick up all the fansubs I can download from bittorrent online, and anime is sold everywhere in fanfriendly formats. I need to back off from working anime and going back to enjoying it.

But this weekend was good. No more backaches, cold wasn't bothering me, got lots of sleep. Had some people from the Denver Anime meetup (Meetup.com) over for an anime watching - everybody brought a few things over and we watched a few of each - lots of comedy (Inu Yasha, Mahoromatic, Beast Century), a bit of angsty (Wolf's Rain) - not a lot of action or giant robots, which I found myself craving by the end... but by the end I was also craving a break. Such it goes. Next time I'll have to make sure to have something more my taste. (Not that romantic comedy isn't my taste - it is - but I need something else too.) Got us to pick up a bit around the house too.

After that I spent a lot of this weekend studying. Last weekend I picked up this cool book called Java Garage, and it's really good - a chatty, useful Java book, based on Java 5, which doesn't assume the writer is a newb. There's little digressions here and there - recepies for Flapjacks, for instance - but they're not long and I think they help break up the slog of learning a new language. Plus, the examples given are fully working units that you can easily adapt as utility objects to use in your own programs.

I've also been reading my way slowly through Beginning ASP.NET 1.1 E-Commerce, a good book on how to start from nothing and build up a working online store. It takes you in hand, step by step - at first some bits are very basic (why stored procedures are good and step-by-step how to input them), but as the book goes on more of that is skipped over and it just continues showing how to build up a site. It's good, solid information that's useful, and as an example the ecommerce site I've been building at my job is based on what I've learned from this book.

So, a nice, productive weekend. Worked on the house, had some fun, learned some stuff. Drank some coffee, too. Can't ask for much more.

See ya.
