Hmm... a little busy recently with this or that, and I should try to update more often.

1) We've got a new door! The house I live in came with a door, but it was a) ugly and b) ill-fitting, which meant that during the winter cold air would blow through chinks in it. This is partially because the door frame is not so much rectangular as trapazoidal, which is hard to fit a door too. For that matter, the door frame is over sized as well - our house was originally built around 1882 or so, and as such there's not a lot of standard equipment on it. We eventually ended up buying a door via a company called 'The Door Store', and about three-four weeks ago they installed a lovely hardwood door, which their installer cut to fit and made sure it was snug and well-fitting. It's great!

And this last weekend Tammy and I worked on sanding, staining, and sealing the wood... which is now done and we can relax. It took a while to wait for a weekend where we were up for the work and the weather was good enough that having the door open for a few hours wasn't suicidal.

2) Well, as long-time readers may know, I've got this extra house. Short story is: old friend who I trusted very much bought a house, and I co-signed on the loan. The friend's life went south very badly, and ran out on us, leaving us with a house to pay for. Up until very recently, we had a guy renting the house with a pretty solid option to buy, but he'd been having financial troubles and was paying us late. This last week he let us know he couldn't afford the house anymore, and he's since moved out. Sigh.

Good side is, Tammy says he took fairly good care of the house, and cleaned it up nicely before he left. So, until we can find someone to rent it, we've got to pay a third mortgage payment each month. Le sigh.

If you know of anyone who's interested in renting a small, two-bedroom one-floor house with detached two-car garage and fenced in back yard, please point them at me. Once we've got the house definately ready, I'll probably start advertising on Craigslist and elsewhere.

3) City of Heroes
So, Tammy and I have been playing World of Warcraft for about 10ish months so far, and we've been having a pretty good time with it. It fits in with my style of playing better than an earlier experiment with Final Fantasy Online did, and I've been really enjoying some of the special events and the like. I'd heard good things about City of Heroes, though.

Well, this weekend someone on my lj list pointed out that this was a Double XP Weekend for CoH, and that he could give away ten day free trials for the game. It sounded like a good idea, so my wife and I got some memberships and tried the game out. It seems fun, although with life item 2 above I don't know if I can afford a second game right now.

a) The comments folks have made about the character generation system are true: You really do have an insane number of options for how your character looks. What I appreciated was that although you had a lot of options, none of them seemed to look bad with each other - when I was experimenting with 2nd Life, I found that it was all too easy to work on the details and have them look good, but the face as a whole looked badly wrong. If anything, I had too many choices - for my first character, I just wanted something that looked cool.

b) I went with the closest analog of my WoW main character - a fighter type. High defense and medium offense means I can run around town fairly safely on my own and bang on enemies. My wife was more of a blaster type, and so had some trouble at first. We teamed up a little and had some fun, though.

c) Speaking of Teams, they get really noisy when you've got seven folks on a mission together. You've got five different type of energy blasting around you while you're trying to focus on someone and take them down - it's crazy. I'm glad I've got my newer video card.

Anyway, such is life. I'll probably play more CoH this weekend, as Tammy goes off and enjoys GenghisCon.
