A Satisfying Weeekend
Oct. 16th, 2006 03:18 pmThe weekend went by pretty well. No more emergencies, for one, which was nice.
Friday was the second session of my 'Expedition Against the Giants' D&D game, where I'm running a group of players through the classic 'Against the Giants' game. Unfortunately between the first and second games one player had to drop out due to a schedule problem, but a second player had joined, so she played the missing player's character until we could get to a good scene change and swap in her character. The base idea is that they're a group of criminals (for various reasons) who have been sentanced to death, but have been offered a chance to earn their lives by taking care of the growing Giant threat.
Two big battle setpieces - the first one just kept going worse as a mishandled fight drew in more opponents than they could handle, and the second one an ambush set by the players to take out a patrol of giants. The second one went much better than the first, but amusingly enough my wife's character got incapacitated both times - although close to the end of both fights.
It'll be interesting to see what they decide to do next.
On Sunday I played in my usual Sunday D&D game, which has been less usual than usual due to other things interrupting the usual schedule. We're all trapped in a level of the Abyss, hiding in a refugee colony under a prison that had been seized a number of years ago by one faction, where the original owners had retreated underground to live. Basically, it wasn't an interesting enough area for the new owners to bother cleaning out, so they'd settled into sort of a peaceable 'we'll ignore you if you ignore us split'. We had a possibility of leaving down there, but wanted to head back upstairs and retrieve the rest of our possessions that had been siezed when we were captured originally... which lead into an interesting set-piece of a fight, some exploration, and then we watched as things went pear-shaped for the current owners as something horrible somehow got set loose. In chaos there is opportunity, and we're opportuning to leave, I think. Not entirely sure if we'll be able to get back 'home' soon - which is a shame, as I'd been looking forward to rebuilding the town we'd been helping clear out before.
