Election Wows
Nov. 8th, 2006 05:29 pmSo, the Democrats took over the House - which was expected - but by far more than most people thought.
And it really looks like they may take the Senate as well - which I don't think anyone thought, but it's two close races (Virginia and Montana) and they're close in favor of the Democrats. I suspect recounts in the future... but it's generally been my experience that when it's close it doesn't often change enough to change who wins when everyone is counted.
It's a little crazy.
Locally, Democrats took the Governer's mansion, which will be interesting - Colorado as a whole tends pretty republican, so the fact that a Democrat took over really suggests that people are getting tired of the state of the union. Unfortunately, both the Gay Marriage ammendment passed (dang) and the Partner Benefits failed (dang), which shows that there's a fair amount of conservitism in Colorado as a whole. (Denver itself is more progressive.)
I found the results on legalizing small amounts of marijuana very interesting - it failed, as I expected, but it only failed on a 60%-40% split, which was much more even than I had expected. (Insert Boulder 'Get out the vote' joke here.) Personally, I'm in favor of legalizing it, licensing it, and taxing it to heck, because I still haven't seen anything MJ does where Alcohol and smoking aren't as bad. Ah, well.
Generally, I'm pretty happy with the results. Not as good as I was hoping in some areas, but better than I expected in others.
