A week or two ago a friend of mine got me interested in Final Fantasy Online, to the point where I actually *bought* a copy and started to play it. He's pushed me to play one of these games before, and I'd resisted up to this point, but finally I got a copy and sat down to play it on my PC.

It's a fun game, generally. I like running out and smashing monsters. I like that not all monsters are the same - I'd say it seems like most of them seem to be more or less average, but a proportion of them will be higher-power critters that it takes a while longer to kill, and sometimes there'll be a weaker one to smash. There's a variety of things to do in the game, as well. There's the standard 'run into the wilderness and smash the critters', which can be fun. There are Missions, which are plot-important things to do that you do in order. There are Quests, which aren't as plot important and can involve doing a number of things, sometimes just in town. And then there's what I think of as Wants - Bob the artificer will happily pay you if you bring him Blah or Blah. Wants are usually repeatable - if you're fetching materials for an alchemist, she'll take all you can get.

And if you don't want to do those things, there's crafting - taking raw materials and making something useful out of them. I haven't really gotten into that yet, as I'm trying to limit the time I spend playing it.

I'm having a lot of fun with it too. I'm playing a Red Mage, which is a mixture of a fighter and a wizard. I can go out and hit things with my sword fairly well, but I've also got a mixture of spells I can cast. This is nice for me because it gives me a selection of things to try and do.

On another front, I finally got my missing DVD back from ADV. I'd bought a bunch of DVDs when they had their Labor Day sale, and one of the DVDs hadn't been shipped to me because they apparently ran out. It arrived on Saturday, so that wasn't too bad. (Their shipping for the sale got disrupted by the Hurricane season, as they're in Houston.) Tammy and I sat down and watched one of the discs that I'd ordered, 'Full Metal Panic!', disc 1. Wow. I'd been told it was good before, but I was really surprised how much I was enjoying it. Sousuke Sagara, a Sargent in an elite secret military force, is assigned to bodyguard a girl - Kaname Chidori - who is a possible target for kidnapping for reasons I don't know yet. (Apparently she's a McGuffin.) They do this by putting him into her class, as a transfer student, as he looks really young. Hijinks ensue - he's both unsuited to be a high school student in attitude, and he keeps leaping into any room she's in when he sees something and thinks it's an attack.

But it's not just hijinks - people really are out there who want her, and that's becoming very clear in the third episode, where they switch over to things going bad. I don't know how it continues, but I'm really looking forward to finding out. So, have a look.
