Worldcon: 2009 Hugo Recommendation Panel
2009 Hugo Recommendation Panel:
This was a very tiring panel to listen to and try to record. The panel members talked very quickly, and not very clearly. This lead to my noting down things without remembering who said what.
First off, they went through and asked each person one item they're recommending:
"Little Brother", Cory Doctorow
"House of Suns", Alastair Reynolds
"Doctor Horrible's Sing Along Blog"
"The Road", some sort of small production sf post-apocolypse movie that was recommended by a few people, although I'm not sure if they've seen it yet.
So, then they started in on the books
"City at the End of Time", Greg Bear
"Incandescence", Greg Egan
"January Dancer", Michael Flynn
"Quiet War", Paul McAuley
"Night Sessions", Ken Macleod
"Pirate Sun", Karl Schroeder
"Saturn's Children", Charles Stross (Two recommendations)
"Anathem", Neal Stephenson
"The Shadowed Year", (Can't find the author)
"Lavinia", Ursula K. Le Guin
"The Hidden World", Paul Park
"The Dragons of Bayle", Andrew Swann, although I can't find it on the net
"The Alchemy of Stone", Ekaterina Sedia
"An Evil Guest" - Gene Wolfe
"Pandemonium", Daryl Gregory
"Zoe's Tale", John Scalzi
"The Steel REmains" Richard Morgan
"Matter" Ian Banks
"Lord Tophet: A Shadowbridge Novel", Gregory Frost
"The Graveyard Book", Neil Gaiman
"Tender Morsels", Margo Lanagan
"Flora's Dare" Ysabeau S. Wilce
Collections of short stories:
One or more of the folks up front in the session mentioned that there had been really good stories published in the pulp magazines. Personally, I don't read them. But they also had some collections of short stories to recommend:
"Galactic Empires", edited by Gardner Dozois
"The Solaris Book of New Science Fiction: Volume 2", Edited by George Mann
"The Starry Rift", Edited Jonathan Strahan
Something that I can't find that was edited by Niel Harrison?
"Del Ray Book of Science Fiction & Fantasy", edited by Ellen Datlow
"Eclipse 2: New Science Fiction and Fantasy", edited by Diana Wynne Jones, Stephen Baxter, and Nancy Kress
"Sideways in Crime", edited by Lou Anders
"Fast Forward 2" - although the person had not read this, he thought it would be good.
... and at this point, I'm too tired of searching for things to post them. After this they got to recommending various short stories, and I couldn't keep up. Maybe someone else recorded those?
